Strawberry Thief is one of the William Morris most popular repeating designs for textiles. It takes as its subject the thrushes that Morris found stealing fruit in his kitchen garden of his country home, Kelmscott Manor in Oxfordshire.
To print the pattern Morris used the ancient and painstaking indigo-discharge method be admired above all forms of printing.
Associated with the British Arts and Crafts Movement, he was a Major contributor to the revival of traditional British textile arts and methods of production. William Morris is recoginised as one of the most significant cultural figures of Victorian Britain.
Though best known in his lifetime as a poet, he posthumously became better known for his designs.
